Salt Mounds

We found the mounds of salt really fascinating. Even Bayo had do go and check it out. We were encouraged by the local officials to take some little samples home with us.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the salt lake. With everyone in the picture wearing winter coats, you would be tempted to think that it was cold and wintery. But, alas, it was in the 80's and sunny.

As a part of our tour, we drove to the deepest part of the valley: the salt lake near Dawari.

Because the fall rains have been abundant this year, the salt gleaning season has already finished. The migrant workers who normally populate the area from July through October have departed, returning to their homes until next year's dry season.

When the lake water is low, workers can dig up the salt as a source of income. It's big business here!--everything from table salt for human consumption...to additives for animal feed...to scouring pads for pots and pans.

Once the salt has been pulled from the lake, it is analyzed for its texture and purity, then categorized by number according to its quality. Large white mounds are made, and potential buyers are welcomed to choose which mound they will buy.

Once purchased, arrangements are made for trucks to haul the salt away to refineries. . .even as far away as Rwanda and Uganda!

Of course, once the rainy season arrives, as it is now, the water helps to return the residue back down to the lake.

We also got to talk with them about how this business impacts their economy. During years of drought, when the crops fail and the agricultural economy is suffering, the salt harvest is more abundant. But when the rains are abundant and the crops flourish, the salt harvest is "not so good." What a blessing to this region: a stable regional economy come rain or shine!

Unusual Post-Conference Opportunities (Pt.2)

Mt Hanang is the dominant feature throughout the region as it towers above all the valley and villages below.

Before we left the valley this time, we decided to spend a few hours touring the valley and getting to know the area a bit better.

(What a great idea! In addition to having a great time "exploring" Africa, it's been our desire scope out more of the surrounding territories in which some of our pastor friends are working to expand God's Kingdom and to make His Name known. We then feel more connected, as we join them in praying for this land and its people and in praising God for His goodness and mercy.)

The seasonal rains have transformed this area into lush and fertile ground. The animals and even the people seem to be more alive and hopeful, and the green trees lend a sense of hope.

Acacia trees have become my favorites. Their twisting limbs create interesting patterns, and their sprawling canopies provide a cooling respite, a peaceful setting in the lovely grove.

Village of Dawari

As we finished the training conference with the Pastors in Dawari, we packed up our car and felt very blessed to be a part of what the Lord is doing in East Africa.

It is our prayer that we will continue to witness true transformation in this area as people are set free from bondage, sickness and disease, and their minds and hearts are opened to the power of the Gospel message. The beautiful and friendly people of Dawari were truly a blessing to us, from the children playing along the roads and fields to the smiling faces of the locals as they greeted us along the way.

We pray a blessing upon them, as well. . .on their homes and on their families, on the fruit of their crops, and the fruit of their herds.

May the Lord bless and keep them as we are apart for the next few months, and may He bring us together again to share testimonies of God's mighty work and presence among them and to spur each other on again to love and to good works (Hebrews 10:24).

UPDATE from Gendabi

When we prayed at the Gendabi springs, seeking the Holy Spirit and then acting on His direction, we had noticed a few villagers watching from the cover of the scrub brush and bushes. We learned later that some had carried word of our actions to surrounding villages. Upon seeing the evidence of the purifying of the waters the locals who had been doing the sacrifices were now afraid to go back to the tree, since it was clear that the "One True and Living God” has strong power. Because,….

by the end of the day, there was already evidence being reported!

"What were the problems with the water?" you may ask. Local pastors reported that sickness (and from time to time even death) has been directly linked to drinking water from this spring. Goiters develop, not over a long period of time, but within days! Teeth also begin to discolor and decay very quickly. But most strangely of all, within 30 minutes of a person drinking from this spring, he/she begins to exhibit an inexplicable sudden onset of anger and violence. The locals compare it with an alcoholic drunken rage. . .but, they were consuming no alcohol! Only this spring's water.

Since our prayer time there, the reports are continuing to come in! We are repeatedly being told that the contention and drunken anger stopped the very day we all prayed over the spring at Gendabi. Truly amazing! In addition, an overall improvement in health is being reported in the local villages and down the mountainside. No more quick-onset goiters! No more unexplainable dental problems!

We rejoice that God has revealed His goodness and power to these people, and pray that the pastors can effectively continue to bring the good news of the Gospel to these people who have seen and even TASTED the goodness of the Lord. Many more testimonies have been reported of the change that has taken place from that day. We rejoice and bless our Lord Jesus Christ who is indeed the healer and redeemer! May His Name be praised forever!

Here is a report we received just this week from Pastor Gabriel Magang, the Unity Committee Chairperson: (please excuse his broken English)

“ I and my people we are still remember the days we spent together with you! Especially the day of prayer we shared with you at the source of water at Gendabi spring and at the salt lake. Praise the Lord with us, because we received the answer of that prayer… for [your] information, people are reporting: The ones who concerned to put that poison in the water source was [name withheld], who went to witch doctors and brought the devil-poison from there to put into the water source in order to enable him to rule easily all the users of that water from Gendabi down to Dawari village.”

Our experience at this local spring was a sort of training for the pastors who accompanied us. We are encouraged that they saw the simplicity of seeking the Lord instead of a formula. Indeed, God knows what needs to happen in every circumstance and He is willing to lead us into all truth when we wait upon Him, and follow Him in obedience and courage.

Prayer Strategies for Transformation

We sought the Lord together to ask Him what He would have us do to bring freedom and healing to these waters.

Strategy #1 – Prayer at the tree

Together with the pastors who came with us, we entered into identificational repentence for seeking after other gods, and not the One True and Living God. The Holy Spirit led us to repent as representatives on behalf of the people of the area for seeking “lesser alternatives” than the Lord Jesus Christ for the redemption of the land and the people.

With one heart we acknowledged that the earth is, indeed, the Lord's and the fulness thereof; the world and all those who dwell in it (Psalm 24:1). By giving the land and its people back to God, asking Him to bring revival to this place, we aligned with God and His purposes to bring life and light into and through this very site.

Strategy #2 – Prayer at the water source

Both Aisack and I were reminded of the story in Exodus 15, when Moses heeded to the Lord's instruction and threw a piece of wood into the water, and they were healed. When the Lord brought this passage to mind, we were compelled to obey the principle of this Biblical example. We prayed that the One True and Living God, the Lord Jesus Christ, would cleanse the waters and make them a source of life instead of a source of sickness and disease. In obedience, I tossed the branch into the water. (I must confess feeling a little silly; however, I pushed past my discomfort and chose to exercise faith and claim the sovereignty of God.)

Strategy #3 – Prayer at the pipes

Recognizing that these pipes now have the task of delivering this blessed water throughout the valley, the pastors each laid their hands on the pipes and prayed for God's abundant blessing to replace the enemy's curses.

Unusual Post-Conference Opportunities (Pt.1)

We awoke early and ran into our day! Having made previous arrangements, we circled the village in our Suzuki, picking up each pastor we had invited to join us. We then drove to the outskirts of the village, heading toward Mount Hanang.

Our car maneuvered as far along the dirt path as possible before we had to park and continue the trek on foot.

After a few minutes walking up the path, we arrived at the wooded area near the source of the village's water—a spring bubbling up at the base of a stately, old tree.

The gentle, bubbling water that emerges from deep within waters the village of Gendabi, but also flows into the valley below, reaching even to other villages nearly on the horizon.

Generations of local villagers have worshiped deities residing therein, holding ceremonies and making sacrifices to appease the spirits they believe are responsible for drought or flooding, famine or abundance. (The dark- and light-colored streaks on the tree's trunk testifies of a very recent sacrifice.)

Pastors and villagers readily testify that those who drink of the water that flows here suffer terrible physical, emotional, and spiritual problems. (More on that a bit later.)

Although Christians in the region have learned that they possess the ability and the authority to do something about this situation, they have lacked the hands-on experience.

The AIM team and 4 local pastors decided that we needed a spiritual strategy. So we decided to pray.

End of the conference day

There is nothing more beautiful than an African sunset! Thank God with us for this beautiful land and the wonderful people He has placed here.

Pray also that God continues to spread this pastoral training in larger and larger areas, pouring out His Spirit, so that His Kingdom will come and His will is done on the earth as in heaven. Join us in praying that we will have the privilege of returning to this area to witness with our eyes and testify of what He has done. For His honor and glory!

Unity in the Spirit

MORE UNITY present and very obvious as pastors turn to bless one another:

- praying for the empowerment of the Spirit and spiritual insight and increase in gifts

- praying for continued unity.

- praying for each church to grow and thrive

- praying for each pastor to become mighty in God, sensitive to the leading of His Spirit and able to stand against evil in every form

- praying for courage to step up in their communities, to become true servant-leaders who stand for truth so that a new culture of righteousness in covenant may begin.

Bayo (apostolic church planter among the Iraqw) and Aisack (Evangelist church planter among the Maasai) pray powerfully over one another as examples to all the other pastors. Prayers for strength and protection, for courage in the face of intense adversity, and prayers for Gods will to be done on earth as in heaven by empowering the message of the true Gospel in sweeping ways all over their land.

Women pastors/leaders now comprise about 1/3 of our audience. They are well accepted by the male leadership in attendance. They contribute strongly to the sense of unity and strength in this crowd. Praise the Lord for their participation and leadership.

This pastor, grateful for the teaching, hurried forward choosing to pray with Bob for

AIM. He fervently interceded for the ongoing mission of AIM in Tanzania and also the rest of the world.

A New Friend (especially for Susan!)

Flora is a beautiful, intelligent young woman with a sweet spirit. Nineteen years of age, she is a victim of spinal tuberculosis, and because of her deformities was rejected and forced from her home by her family who thought she was a curse to them. A few years ago she was confined to a wheelchair, but when she became a Christian, Bayo prayed for her healing and baptized her. She then “graduated” to arm brace crutches. However, through consistent and fervent prayer she can now walk independntly without the crutches, but her badly twisted back limits a lot of her movements.

At Bayo’s invitation, Flora attended our conference in Dawar, riding there on a piki-piki (Tanzanian motorcycle taxi). When we heard about her travel to get there, we made arrangements to drive her home in our car at the end of the conference, thus giving us the opportunity to get to know her and her life even more. She is presently in the home of a friend until it is time for her school to start. She invited us to her humble home the next morning where she prepared and served us chai and mandazi (African fried donut-like pastry), making deliberate moves to serve us herself. We felt so humbled by her spirit of generosity in the face of her challenges.

Our hearts are so blessed to know Flora, this beautiful and tender child of God. We will pray faithfully for her and we look forward to seeing her again when we return and check on her progress at school.

Note: Please pray for Flora’s continued schooling and finances. She is an excellent student, and she has the heart to continue her education so that someday she may become a teacher to other children with disabilities. In this culture, it is so common for disabled children to be unwanted and uncared for. (We have heard several times about the common practice among some tribes to simply take their “cursed” children out to the bush and leave them for the lions and hyenas. Others have been known to lock their child in a back room of their house, giving them no food or water until they die.) Flora dreams of giving disabled children the love and encouragement with which God has blessed her, as well as someone with whom they can “belong.”

Because she now has no family to care for her, the prospects of her continued education are slim. Bayo has said that if she can afford the next level of her schooling, he and his family want her to join their family, to open their home to her so that she could be near the school. Thus, she now faces the big challenge of school fees. . .all by herself. Only $350 per year would pay for her school fees, her supplies, the school uniform, etc. Please pray for her.

Another teaching day begins

In the shadow of Mt Hanang to the east we begin our days with gentle sunrises as the clouds rise above the mountain. We gather early to begin the teaching so that we are sure to cover all the material God has given us in clear and concise ways.

Compelling stories and deliberate application holds the attention of the participants who sit all day on hard benches in order to drink in the truths that God sent us there to deliver. The pastors become very excited and even animated as Christian and Bayo drill down in the Word to prove the ways of the Lord and how we can indeed live in and through the Spirit of God in us.

Everyone follows along in their Bibles, studying intently, as we pray that the Spirit of Truth will lead them into all truth in Jesus’ mighty name.

Aisack Laizer at Movie Night

As I wrote earlier, in the evenings, we assembled a simple projector and sound equipment powered through our car battery as the evening fell and darkness began to settle in. We showed some Christian evangelistic (Swahili language) music films on a white sheet tacked to the outside of the church building, where literally hundreds of residents from local villages came to watch.

At the end of the music films, we played a Christian movie in the light of the projector. Then Aisack used his evangelistic giftings as the crowd grew more and more numerous. He stepped forward to preach the Gospel message with clarity and power, while we prayed for a move of the Spirit of God.

And move He did, as evidenced by numerous hands held high throughout the crowd. Many people prayed to receive Christ for the first time, while others were moved to return to God with renewed commitment.

The pastors of the Dawari region will no doubt be very busy following up on these precious new believers and discipling them in their new-found faith in the One True and Living God.

A Special Choir

A specially assembled community choir performed songs for us in the tradition of the local tribes. Worshiping together we praised the King of Kings and proclaimed that His is the One true and living God. They demonstrated some of their traditional dance and dress.

The beauty of colorful beadwork and traditional costumes, and lovely African voices and harmony are quite a display. We were made very welcome as they showed their appreciation in public ways, to honor us.

Learning Together, Praying Together, Repenting Together

The pastors and church leaders were powerfully moved during the conference to intercede for their people and to repent. Their prayers are fervent and emotional as they recognize how God has made atonement for us through Jesus when He became the covenant for us.

They learn to recognize areas of their lives where compromise has allowed a stronghold of the kingdom of darkness, but that when they truly repent and align their lives with God they can see a change in their lives and often their circumstances as well. Anglican pastors alongside pentecostal, Baptists hand-in-hand with Lutherans, with like-heart and like-mind we all turn our hearts to know the heart of the Father for this land.

All together, we join as one, proclaiming the mighty name of Jesus and acknowledging that

He is indeed Lord of our lives,

Lord of our churches,

Lord of all we possess,

and indeed LORD WHO REIGNS OVER ALL!

Lots of Assistants

We had a lot of assistance this year with our conference teaching. In addition to our U.S. 3-person team, we were excited to include 3 Tanzanians!

Bayo was our fellow-teacher, as well as our main interpreter for the week. We love him dearly, and are so honored to have him as a part of our team.

Polycarp (pictured above, with Bob) was able to join us again this year for one of the days of teaching. He is very passionate about teaching pastors. Ever since he helped us train pastors last year about the Covenant we have with our God, he has continued to spread that message to his first-year ministry students at Agape Bible School.

Aisack, our long-time friend and Maasai pastor, also joined us for conference for the first time. He ministers with our friends at Key Connections Ministry, as they reach out to spread the Gospel among the Maasai tribe. He has been hearing rumors from the pastors in the Manyara Region that there is a movement amongst the churches in that region—a genuine unity, across denominational lines, as all agree to pursue the Lord Jesus Christ and to keep God’s Word as the authority of us all. God has been encouraging Aisack with the same message; so he asked if he could join us, to see this unity and how it is accepted among the Iraqw tribe.

Once again, the pastors who joined us for the conference were engaged and attentive. We see some of the same pastors each time. They like to come each and every time, but inevitably we have pastors who cannot travel or who must be working their farms. Nonetheless, we have new pastors each time as well, pastors who leave excited and energized. . .begging for another conference soon!

From the church property, many walking paths wind between farms and seem to disappear into the “bush” landscape.

Simple Village of Dawari

Dawari is a village in the Manyara Region, bordering both the Iraqw tribe and the Barabaig tribe.

This community is full of family farms. Everyone has a part in working the farm, from hard-working adults to young children.

There were less than a dozen huts/homes in view at any given point during our drive into the village.

However, in the evenings when we invited the community to come for evangelistic movies which we projected onto the side of the church, people emerged from the bush to see this unusual sight.

As Bob began to set up the projector each evening, there would inevitably only be a few people gathered, mostly the pastors. However, with the anonymity that comes with nighttime’s darkness, we found that the crowd grew to hundreds of people, both from this village but also from neighboring villages miles away.

Leaving the paved road

The road narrows as we leave the tarmac to bump along on the way to Dawari, the site of our next pastors conference. Along the way, we passed pastors who were walking in from their villages, as well.

Even in the Dawari region, farmers are very busy responding to the rain and the warmer weather.

As we drew near to the Dareda Valley area, we were in awe of the vibrance of the red dirt, and the almost-neon green new growth.

Many people are out in the fields, plowing and preparing to plant even more seeds.

They are excited about the potential of a second harvest this season!

When a family is fortunate enough to own livestock and a plow, the back-breaking work of tilling the ground becomes significantly easier. But make no mistake, life is still very primitive in the bush, and working the ground is still heavy labor.

The power lines you can see in the distance are taking electricity to larger cities on the other side of the mountains. Very few villagers have the luxury of electricity, vehicles or farm machinery.

Construction Zone

As we travel the remote roads, we see the life of the people played out before us. Children playing around the yard even while improvements and expansion of their homes are underway. Tall-grown grass has recently been cut, in preparation for a new grass roof.

Even young children have heavy responsibility during harvest season, perhaps even selling produce to drivers passing through the area. This lady has a big job, a heavy load to carry! She took a brief break to set down her load and rest. Behind her you can see the ongoing road construction that promises better travel in this area in the future. (This 55-mile stretch of road took us a little over 2½ hours to travel; so we really look forward to improvements!)

The local “hot Spot.” In the middle of one of the small villages we passed through, we saw this funny little scene. A pool table under a little shelter with benches for onlookers, a satellite dish beside a mud and stick structure (we’re not really sure what that’s about!), and a bicycle- the more modern form of local transportation.

It's GREEN! Hallelujah!

We began our trip out to our next pastors conference in "the bush" with great joy as deep green fields and trees adorned the roadsides. Even the mountains were colored with life and growth. Occasional dark clouds overhead did nothing to “dampen” our mood. They merely held the promise of even more rain from our faithful Father. We turned up the volume of our praise music and sang our way into the mountains, giving glory to the Most High God, Creator and Sustainer of heaven and earth!

Rainfall softens the hard ground allowing them finally to plow, work the ground, and plant. What a wonderful backdrop for AIM's teaching about our covenant God Who responds to the prayers and repentance of His people, providing for their needs and directing them in His ways.

Even in the valleys, we saw evidence of the expected good crops due to sustaining rainfall. The village of Magugu is widely known throughout Tanzania for their good quality rice. The mood in the village has been very positive because this is an active time of year for the farmers.

Baobabs made a beautiful silhouette as the sky gets dimmer, reminding us that we had just a few more minutes to enjoy our surroundings before the day's end.

So, we headed to Tarangire National Park for a day safari.

The elephants are my favorites.

They are huge, strangely graceful, and can almost act. . .human. The way that they care for the younger in the herd, the way that they touch and reassure each other when one is nervous or upset.

A visit with Polycarp

Perhaps you may recall our wonderful friend Polycarp.

Last year Polycarp assisted us when Bob’s backpack, wallet, and driver’s license was stolen, by driving Bob to our conference in the bush.

However, Polycarp’s abilities as a translator and Bible School teacher made him a wonderful asset to our team for the week by assisting in translating for us, giving Bayo a respite for his overworked voice from time to time. Polycarp was very enthusiastic as he learned right alongside us while translating the principles of the Christian’scovenant with God.

One year later. . .and here we are! We visited Polycarp and his wife Ana in their home. We shared wonderful stories of life and ministry. How he has grown in the past year! He has now taken a full-time position at Agape Bible School (on the outskirts of Arusha, in Tengeru village) as both a teacher and principle. His favorite class is Basic Theology for the first-year students. . .in which he teaches our covenant materials (among other things, of course).

He was so excited to know that we are continuing our teaching conferences out in the bush. He has volunteered to join us for our conference at the end of this month. (The Bible School is on break now for the holidays.) Likewise, Bayo is also happy to have Polycarp’s assistance.

Been watching the banana plant in the back yard. In just a matter of 3 days (pictured above), we watched the large burgundy-colored petals peel away from each layer. . .revealing yet another row of bananas!

Just a few feet away was a large stalk ready to be harvested. Our helper Jofrey used the “panga” (local machete) to cut it down, while the neighbor’s helper prepared to catch it as it fell. We then held it in our storage room for 2 weeks, and—voila!—wonderfully sweet, beautifully yellow bananas!

The view of the Dareda valley from higher ground in Bashanet is absolutely beautiful--billowing clouds in the blue sky, the broad landscape in shades of browns and rusts and greens.

But at this time of year the clear, sharp picture may fool you. . .

Just drive for a few minutes on the road (especially behind another vehicle), and the air isn’t quite as crisp and clear!

These poor villagers are transporting fresh-cut sugar cane on the road, too. I feel sorry for them every time someone passes them. No dust masks out here!

So, while we were in Bashanet, we had the nicest home in town! We were so blessed by Father John, as he graciously hosted us in his home. The rooms were wonderfully comfortable, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

Of course, you remember that we love plants and gardening. So, of course, we walked around Father John’s house, admiring the carefully planted garden in the front yard. But,. . .we saw a strange plant that none of us can identify.

Meet our new Friend!

We were blessed to meet Father John (pictured on right), the Catholic priest in Bashanet. While we have taught a few Catholic teachers in the past, there was always an air of secrecy. They were rather worried of their authorities' disapproval, though they found the training of great value.

As Bayo taught AIM material in our absence this past year, Father John heard rumors of a unity-focused group of pastors. Though a bit skeptical, he agreed to meet Bayo for a cup of chai. Hearing the vision of AIM and seeing the evidence of inter-denominational unity throughout the area, Father John agreed not only to attend our conference, but also asked to have the privilege of hosting our stay.

Father John is a wonderful testimony of the growing unity among church leaders from many denominations. Denominational segregation is common here, as it is all over the world. However, when we explain that we will not bring any particular denomination’s doctrine, it often causes them to be just a bit curious. . .though perhaps still somewhat suspicious.

The testimony of their experience becomes evident when many come later to greet us with an open heart. . .just as Father John expressed his enthusiastic affirmation for the ministry of AIM. He loved how vibrant and Biblically-sound the teaching materials were. He agreed that when when denominationally controversial doctrines are emphasized, then we will undoubtedly cause segregation; but when we teach strictly the Bible as our authority, THEN we can all stand in agreement, in unity. All pastors throughout the room we were of one heart. . .with the Word of God, not the “bent” of a particular denomination, as the center of our message and our ministries. As brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, we have the joyous privilege to learn and grow together, and to care for one another. As Father John said, "Truly the Holy Spirit is at work here."

Food prep. . .African style

Young women tirelessly prepared lunch each day for us and about 120 pastors and church leaders. Each day, a small wagon (pictured here) arrived with water barrels to facilitate the cooking, hand-washing, and dishwashing. The building, on the left emiting smoke, is the cooking “kitchen,” and the large pile of wood that has been collected sits ready as fuel for the open fires upon which the food is cooked. No chimney for the kitchen house means the smoke must find its way out through small spaces just below the roofline.

These amazing women produced cooked beef and goat in a broth, rice (2 varieties: plain white and broth- flavored), beans, cooked greens, and roasted potatos. . .with bananas and oranges for dessert. Yes, we eat right alongside the participants. And surprisingly, right on time for our mid-afternoon breaks they brought freshly brewed tea for refreshment for our training team. There was a tremendous amount of work in very primitive conditions performed by these quiet servants of the Lord.

Audio Scriptures

Bob is well-respected among these rural pastors. On this visit to the Valley area, he had the joy of presenting 4 battery-powered audio scriptures in Kiswahili for pastors to use in their villages. This is a new and exciting means of spreading the Word of God in their region.

Audio Scriptures are a wonderful evangelistic tool that has proven to be effective not only here in Tanzania, but also in many other parts of the world.

The pastors showed intense interest as Bob provided instructions on use and capability of each of these devices.

Carefuly laying down Biblical foundations, our training team led the pastors present into the process of development into mature disciple-makers, thereby enabling them to bring transformation to their homes, churches and communities by the power of the Spirit of God at work in them.

What a joy it is for us to work with these devoted church leaders. Men and women, side-by-side, in honor and respect for each other. We have seen a steady increase in the percentage of women in attendance at our conferences. It is a true joy for us to witness their hunger and open hearts as they listen and show visible and enthusiastic responses.

Teaching begins

AIM’s teaching on FRUITFULNESS was very well received. We had, perhaps, our youngest ever attendee--this lovely pastor (“Mama Mchungaji” or Pastor Mama) brought her little baby along and did not miss a single session of the training. She followed the notes and scriptures with rapt attention and deep respect.

As we led church leaders through Jesus teaching regarding principles of the Vine and Branches and the Parable of the Sower, they could see how God is at work in their lives and churches. They recognized how our heavenly Vinedresser is faithfully pruning and shaping us so that we will bear abundant fruit. . .fruit that will remain. Times of deep prayer, reflection and repentance were powerfully rich as they aligned their hearts with the will of the Father so that with one heart we can see His Kingdom come and His will done on the earth as it is in heaven.

Welcomed by the Choir

The music was already beginning and the choir was leading worship and praise for the pastors who had come from all over the valley to be present for the teaching conference. Our good friend Tlanka (pronounced “Danka”) immediately came over to our car to assist in gathering our printed materials for distribution to the pastors.

We were delighted with the music of this well-practiced choir who added some coordinated dance to their repertoire, emphasizing the message in song. This church even had access to a generator which powered a keyboard to accompany this group. They blessed us and the conference participants with their very best.

Conference Time, At Last!

This is the day we had been working toward since our arrival in Tanzania. Because of some delays (see previous post), we had to make the lengthy drive early on the morning of conference. As we entered the Dareda Valley again, we followed the line of the cliffs, looking for a road that would get us up and over them. (Bayo had left the day before, so. . .we were kind of on our own!) Finally finding the “pass,” we traversed the winding road to the village of Bashinet, at the top of the cliffs.

We were on our way to conference! The pastors were waiting and eager by the time we arrived!

As we pulled into a dirt lot, we saw the impressive Lutheran church building where we would have our conference. Pastors had already arrived, but now were hurrying into the uncharacteristically (and amazingly) “modern” church.

BAD NEWS!

Well, with less than 24 hours before going out to conference in "the bush," my computer crashed. . .hard!

As we did the final edits of our teaching material, preparing it for the local print shop, my computer would not boot up. Of course, this was a devastating discovery because ALL of our teaching material was on MY computer!

(Yes, a mistake we have all learned from.)

All along, we have tried to keep a copy on each of our computers, just in case something like this happened. However, on this our final day of prep, mine was the ONLY full copy! Yikes!)

Bob to the rescue! He quickly grabbed his emergency computer stuff, and was able to extract the teaching material from my on-its-deathbed hard drive. Praise God, we were then able to print it out quickly and get it to the print shop on time!

But, of course, the bad news was that I was left with a huge computer problem.

After returning from the conference, Bob ran all over town to find a used hard drive for $70. And after fiddling with it for the past 4 days, my computer has been returned to me, and I'm only missing the last month or so of email, etc.

So, a bit of a loss. . .a ton of inconvenience. . .but now I am on track again, and ready to update you on what we have been up to!

Plans are being made. Lots of work, lots of studying, lots of conversations and brain-storming, because. . .

Next week, we plan to travel to Bashinet for a training conference for pastors from many denominations. They have banded together and resolved to build unity in the Manyara region, and it has been working!

They have all been praying for the rains to come, from which their crops and grasses will grow, ensuring an extra harvest. Indeed, the rains have begun, but they are what Bayo refers to as "warning rains"--warning people to make sure their fields have been prepared and planted. He reports, however, that there have been years in which they receive the warning rains, but the true rainy season doesn't come. That causes huge devastation. So, please continue to pray.

We will also be praying for the “rain of the Spirit” to do a work in their hearts and prepare them for the upcoming harvest! Pray with us that the Lord of the Harvest will send out strong, resolute and equipped harvesters into His harvest field, so that the harvest will be truly great--homes, communities, and eventually the entire nation will be positively affected by the wondrous Gospel of Jesus Christ

Car is getting ready

Freshly washed from a spring rain... our ministry car. This little Suzuki Escudo (the equivalent of an American Suzuki Side-kick) has taken us over rough roads and mud pits to faithfully deliver us to town for supplies as well as out to the bush for pastors conferences. We thank God for this car, without which ministry would be impossible; and we pray that it will continue to be relatively problem-free as we plan more conferences in areas beyond where we have yet traveled.

(Ok, so. . .truth be told, it's in "the shop" right now, getting the air-conditioner fixed before our trip out to the bush next week. But, otherwise, it's been good to us.)

Water woes

We struggled for a few days with water problems, as we turned on the water spigot in the house, and only a few trickles came out. Bob recognized it was not a water shortage for our 3-house compound when he climbed up to the water tank and found it full. *sigh*

The other 2 houses within our walls had water. . .so we knew something was wrong in this house’s water line. Thus, Bob got to use a car battery and the 12-volt water pump that he brought with us back in 2006 to pump water from the main tank into the house tank. Sure, it is only a temporary solution until a fundi (fix-it man) can come and help us in a few days, but at least we have water in the meantime!

So we congratulate Bob, our own creative repairman, who came up with a temporary way to overcome. The tank is filled, for the time being, and we can wash some dishes, take baths, and wash the floors. Thank you, Bob!

Bird-watching

It’s not just the flowers that catch our eye these days. An abundance of beautiful and melodious birds have been drawn to our yard by the quiet and peaceful grounds, the pretty flowers, a plate of breadcrumbs we put out, and. . . the newly-hatched flying termites! Gross!!

These gorgeous birds serenade us with calls and melodies, when they aren’t dipping and swerving to catch the termite lunch.

Even weaverbirds and thrush congregate here, joined by the bulbul with its beautiful songs. We got out our African Birds book, and we have been trying to identify them, with some success.

"Jacaranda Lane"

A favorite street on our travels into town is what we call Jacaranda Lane. I have no idea if there really is a name for this street, but it does describe the beautiful purple flowers on the trees that come out in Tanzanian spring. When they begin to fall from the trees, a beautiful purple carpet blankets the road.

Lining the sides of this road , however, are vendors selling plants of every color, shape, and texture. They find any available space along the road, and grow plants in old grocery bags.

Since you understand that we are plant-lovers, I am sure you can see why this is one of our favorite places to drive. Unfortunately, Susan nearly always finds something new she wants to add to our gardens. (Ha-ha!)

Welcome to our neighborhood

Thought you might be interested in seeing a bit or our road. A ditch on the one side of the road acts both as a drainage run-off during the rains and, unfortunately, a dumping ground for unwanted items.

Children spend a lot of time just “hanging out” with friends.

Thorn bushes line the side of our “street” (a clear indication that it is the fence around someone’s property). Metal sheet roofing atop cement block homes dot our neighborhood, as well.

Now, most people in this culture walk everywhere; however, occassionally someone has the privilege of owning a bicycle. Bike owners are not usually children. Adults are the ones who can afford a bike, and adults are (hopefully) the ones responsible enough to ride them.

Just yesterday, we saw a man riding a bike with apparently no brake system. He was in an almost freefall down the road, with the sole of his shoe against the front tire, attempting to slow down. "Careening," I believe is an adequate word.

Some things different. . .some things the same

The road repairs are such an improvement in this area! You may recall photos a year ago of the steep drop offs and pothole-pocked roads that were such a challenge. But behold!--Drainage culverts, road-burms and new pavement! What progress!

All these things are common sights in Arusha these days. Carts are pushed everywhere, heavy-laden with anything from lumber or sugar cane to pots and pans. Mamas carry unusually large loads on their heads, goods for the market or purchases to be transported home again.

But here is a sight we don’t see very often: they are painting the walkways on street! These city workers put up simple barriers (sand bags, paint buckets, or rocks) so that they can hand-paint new lines on the road. I guess, the guy who can paint a straight line gets the job.

More gardening help

We got one of our Tanzanian friends James to help us in our yard, too. After having been away from our headquarters for awhile, there was a lot of catch-up work to be done on the grounds: cleaning, pruning, fertilizing, etc.

James originally worked as our night guard a few years ago. We would wake in the morning to the sound of the hedge clippers or pruning shears, and we quickly came to understand that what he really loved was plants. So he began making a little extra money helping us with our yard.

When we had to leave Tanzania for an extended period of time, James became the full-time gardener to our missionary friends. (We were able to hire him for one day this Saturday, to help us get this yard back under control.)

James is such a great Christian brother. He is a joyful worker who is so pleasant to have around.

Beautiful blooms

Of course we take breaks from our writing and translating to enjoy the lovliness of the Tanzanian land. Susan loves to go outside and get her hands in the dirt. We enjoy beautifying the flowerbeds and bringing in varieties of colorful flowering plants that are abundant in this part of the world.

Of all the Tanzanian plants and trees, perhaps my favorite is this small purple shrub is called a “Yesterday Today and Tomorrow” plant. On the first day that a blossom emerges, it shows a beautiful rich purple color. On the second day, that same bloom changes to a light lilac color (while other blooms are emerging with their first day color); and on the third day that same bloom is white. So, at any given time, there are three different colors of blooms on the same plant!

The fragrance is wonderful, so we put this one near our clothes line where we spend a lot of time on laundry days (ugh!).

In addition to conference material preparation, Bob has been keeping the book work up to date, scanning receipts and working with spreadsheets. The work of a treasurer requires a lot of attention to detail, even when we are on the other side of the world.

Arusha headquarters

People have wondered a bit about what we live like, what our office is like. This is the ministry’s headquarters in Tanzania. No mud hut! We do have a very odd tree in the front that grows in distinct, gangly layers. We call it the “Dr Suess tree.”

One of our most important areas is the kitchen. This area holds a refrigerator and stove, as well as a small table for food prep. A sink and a few shelves for dishes are in a small, adjoining room, and the pantry is yet adjoining that.

The bundle of wires you see on the wall (between the refrigerator and stove) is the generator hook-up. When the electricity is out, Bob knows how to connect everything so that we can at least attempt to keep the fridge cool and a few lights on.

Fresh juice

Maintaining health is an important part of our work here so that we have the strength & stamina to do what is before us every day. This is an area where we have to be very intentional since there are so many challenges to personal health in this part of the world. There are no fast-food options, and a limited number of restaurants where we can safely eat and even fewer that can ensure gluten-free, dairy-free options for Bob’s dietary restrictions. This results in our personal responsibility to plan and prepare meals that will build our strength and immune systems.

We have been to the Blue Heron Restaurant in Arusha many times. On some days, they prepare something that they call “Health Drink.” So, we decided to try it at home. . . sweet passion fruit (in the picture. Don’t look closely--I had been in the rain.), carrots, cucumber, and one beet. Believe it or not, it's very tasty and refreshing! Definitely a pick-me-up.

Spring preparations for fruitfulness

Looking around the countryside, you begin to see people out in the fields, preparing for the short springtime rains. Indeed, there have been hints of the returning rains: a cool breeze and nighttime sprinkles that clear the dust out of the air (though barely moistening the parched dirt).

Even Sofia reports that she and Elibariki will wait to see if the rains come. If the “short rains” begin, they will immediately plant their maize and try for a second harvest this year. However, if the rains do not come, they will not waste the precious seed. They will then wait until next March and the “long rains” before planting a crop.

We have returned to Tanzania at this agriculturally-opportune season, and have begun preparing the material for our next pastors conference. The topic: FRUITFULNESS.

We will discuss spiritual topics related to the preparation of the soil (fallow ground),

the four soils (Matthew 13), the vine and branches, pruning vs. discipline, the harvest, and the rewards of the harvest.

Such concepts will be rather familiar to the very agriculturally-minded Iraqw people. It is our prayer that they will receive spiritual understanding and insight, increasing the fruitfulness of their lives, their churches, and their communities.

UPDATE: Last night, it did indeed rain for several hours. Praise God! The dry, parched ground seemed to drink it up, and already this evening green grass has begun to sprout in our otherwise burnt-brown yard. Perhaps this is heralding springtime in Tanzania

Curious onlooker

Looking out over Lake Duluti, there is a dry, brown hue. However, the beautiful purple jacaranda blossoms bring glorious color. As we walked the garden grounds, we noticed that we were being watched. . .by a local monkey. Perhaps he was curious, or perhaps he was interested in our coffee.

Stroll around Mountain View Lodge

On our way back to Arusha, we stopped for a coffee at the beautiful Mountain View Lodge, where tourists go when they come to Tanzania for safari. We sat for coffee out on the beautifully manicured lawn surrounded by incredible gardens. It was a surprising contrast,….going from the simplicity of the common African home to the posh luxury of a resort.

The banana plants are blooming right now. The petals of the flower unfold one layer at a time exposing little flowers beneath. Those flowers get pollinated and voila! Bananas begin to grow in rows and then in bunches.

Elijah Nnko (with Babu Bob)

Elijah is now 3 months old. Don’t let the pink clothing fool you; he is a happy and healthy little boy. As Bob held him, Sofia giggled and rejoiced that “Babu Bob” (Grandpa Bob) was finally able to see the baby.

According to Sophia’s report, she and little Elijah had many challenges during her pregnancy. When she was only 3 months pregnant, she began bleeding. Doctors examined her that told her that her baby was dead. They scheduled her for medical procedures to clean her out.

But God talked to Elibariki three times, instructing him to fast and pray. God infused Sofia with a great level of faith, and she said “No, my baby lives!”

Throughout her pregnancy and labor there were complications. But, now he is here! They both know that Elijah is a bit of a miracle “by the grace of God.” This little guy is recognized to be a true blessing from God.

As they began to go through the presents, their eyes beamed. Even Elibariki’s young sister came over to check out the new things! We asked Sofia if she already had many things for little Elijah. She said no. Even used baby things are very expensive at the market, beginning at 2000 Tanzanian shillings per piece. (That’s about $1.30 US, but I guess when you figure that the average Tanzanian makes only a dollar a day, we can see the problem.)

Everything we brought was extremely well received. Sofia was most grateful for the clothes and the diapers. She said, “Now I won’t have to go to the market for a long time!”

Of course, she had never seen a pacifier before. They don’t have such things here. When Susan explained its use, Sofia’s eyes lit up. She was relieved to know that, from time to time, she may have a bit of a break.

Believe it or not, Elibariki’s favorite is the pairs of shoes! Even though these shoes will not fit properly for about a year, he laughed openly with excitement and placed the oversized shoes on Elijah’s feet, and stood him up on them!

Elibariki is one proud Papa! He has tender love for his son, even carrying him around, changing him, and playing with him (not at all typical here.)

Presents for Elijah

We had learned about Elijah, when Sofia texted us in mid-June with the grand announcement. Because we know and understand their financial situation, we wanted to bring some gifts to congratulate them. We purchased a few things before leaving the States. But, thanks to a wonderfully generous friend at LifeQuest Church in Holland, Michigan, we were able to bring a large box of baby clothes and diapers for the next full year!

A Visit to Sofia's

We drove to Tengeru on Saturday to see our former office worker, Sofia. You may recall that she began working in our office in 2006, helping maintain our database of pastors. I’m sure you can imagine that it’s a bit difficult to keep addresses and phone numbers in a culture where many live in mud huts in the middle of nowhere!

Sofia is a delight. Her smiling face brings light to a room. She has become a close friend to us.

Last year when we arrived in Arusha, we learned that she had recently been married. She was happily in her new home (pictured above. . .and yes, that is the entire house--a small cement block bedroom and sitting room only, with a kitchen and make-shift toilet enclosure outside). She is so happy, and she and her husband Elibariki are so grateful to God, and in love with each other.

In their home and surrounding yard, they are raising chickens--now up to 8 large chickens and 24 baby chicks. This provides them with both food and a potential little income. Additionally, they have used their yard as a small maize-field. Sofia says they have 2 feedsacks of maize from their crop last year.

When Sophia heard we were coming she wanted to honor us as special guests, so she actually went out and killed one of her chickens and cooked it along with roasted banana for us to eat. She was so excited to have company!

Elibariki is a good and kind man. We came to know him also in 2006, as he worked for friends as a construction worker. He has now learned the skills to be a mason, working well with concrete, brick, and plaster. As you can see, they have a new addition to their family! They are both so happy and excited about this new baby boy, Elijah (pronounced ee-LEE-yah).

Market Day in Tengeru

Saturday is Tengeru’s market day, and you could begin to sense the chaos when entering the village. People from miles around come to buy and sell almost anything--animals, produce, clothes, spices, etc.

Vendors bring their wares and display them across the ground on blankets or mats.

The bustling open-air marketplace is filled with sounds and smells that seem to assault the senses.

I guess when you haven’t grown up in that environment, it takes a bit of getting used to.

Tengeru Bridge

This week, we decided to go to visit a few friends. We were interested in seeing the bridge on the road to Tengeru. These

first pictures above are from 2009, when the bridge was in very poor shape. Local residents reported that there was an evil spirit in the chasm below that would “call” high occupancy vans or buses to careen through the guardrail on one side, plummeting to their deaths in the deep ravine below. Almost weekly, there would be deaths reported at this location. In fact, the guardrails would be repaired, and immediately another vehicle would destroy it again.

In March 2009, the Lord directed us to pray at this bridge, declaring the Word of the Lord over this place. The mysterious accidents stopped. When we returned in 2010, we witnessed the change in the condition of the bridge. The guardrail had remained in place for so long, rust was actually forming! However, you know how we humans can be. . .upon our return this year, we wanted to see it again with our own eyes, to know for sure that this prayer really worked.

I am thrilled to bear witness: the bridge is in fine condition! As we passed over it, the passengers in our car broke into praise to the God who overcomes. We were delighted to notice that there are still rusty places, showing there has been no need to do further bridge repair! God is good!

Return to Tanzanian life

- weekly shopping trips (or worse yet: shopping every other day, if we have no electricity for refrigeration)

- tension and pressure of a tight writing schedule

- foreign language communication when I feel like I have forgotten my Swahili (Bob and Susan are trying to convince me that it will come back to me quickly. I hope so.)

WHAT IS GOD TEACHING ME RIGHT NOW IN LIFE?

- trust, which I will readily admit I have some trouble with.

- to find a place of rest with Him, despite the busy-ness and demands of life and ministry.

- appreciation for the important things in life.

- to take care of myself and my body because He has plans for me and my future.

Focus on Fruitfulness

If we were to boil down all of our focus for the next 3 months of ministry, the one descriptive word would have to be FRUITFULNESS. We will be getting testimony from the pastors we have trained about their fruitfulness when they took the training back to their homes and villages and began to apply what they learned. We will be receiving reports of the new conferences that were given by Bayo when we were in the States over the last 9 months, and we will be equipping him even further as an indigenous training leader.

And we will be training the Pastors and Church Leaders in Fruitfulness. When we speak to them of the agricultural parables and principles of the Bible, we will be talking to them “on their turf”, for they are an agricultural society. By relating to life as they know it, we hope to see an increase of the fruitfulness of their personal lives, their ministries, and even their crops.

We headed out of Detroit this past Thursday for the intensely long travel to East Africa.

While we were excited and eager to go, it seems we were already tired from all of the preparations!

We arrived in Nairobi Saturday morning, and moved amazingly fast through immigration and customs. We gathered our luggage, and flagged down a taxi for the ride to the Mennonite Guest House for a few days of recuperation before the next leg of our journey.

What a wonderful way to enjoy our Lord’s day rest! Our favorite respite along our journey is the “Mennonite Guest House,” which is sort of a hotel for missionaries traveling into and out of East Africa. The weather is warm (but not yet hot), the flowers are blooming, and rest is the order of the day.

Susan remembers back to her childhood when she would contemplate how high she would need to swing in order to fly! Our lodging rooms are in the background and you can see why we love the serenity and beauty of this place as we travel in and out of the country.

Monday morning we will board a bus headed to Arusha, Tanzania, where our ministry headquarters is located, and begin the work of cleaning the house up for occupancy.

The Lord reminds us of His goodness in our safe and uneventful travel, and that He goes before us, preparing the way. We wonder how many times on this ministry tour will we have the opportunity to confirm the promise of the Lord that because He has called us, He will also empower us to do all that He has planned for us to do by His Spirit that dwells in us.

Activation International Ministries has been blessed with a number of ministry partners, some who have been faithful prayer and financial supporters for a number of years and some new friends and fellow-laborers. As together we respond to God’s call in bringing this equipping ministry to church leaders all over the world, it can be likened to many hands holding on to a rope and pulling together to bring the “work of the Lord” into view. Yes, it is a partnership! God has indeed called each one of us, and together as we each “lay our hands to the rope.” He has called us to this work. . .so that together, by His might we may see His Kingdom come and His will done on the earth!

We want you, our fellow-laborers and ministry partners, to know that you are truly appreciated! The AIM teaching team wouldn't be in East Africa, nor could we be "fruitful" in this work, if it were not for your own faithfulness to the Lord through your giving and your prayers. Not all of us are called to physically GO and have a personal, direct hand in the work of this ministry; however, you also partake in the reward of the Lord because of your willingness and faithfulness,...and we will all rejoice together (John 4:36) for the privilege and joy when God draws back the curtain of heaven and reveals the "hundredfold" impact on lives all around the world.

Wow, it has been a long time since I have updated this site. I feel as if I owe you all an apology. I guess when we are busy ministering at home in the States, I often fail to take many pictures or keep you all posted here about what God is doing through our ministry and the wonderful things He is teaching us. Though we have been in the States for the last 9 months, we have not been idle. Much has happened on the "homefront." However, I will have to talk about all that at a later time.

We have just arrived back in East Africa, and our teaching team is once again preparing for pastors conferences out in "the bush" regions of northwestern Tanzania. Please pray for us.

an international prayer team

Our intercessory prayer team took up their positions, quietly and discreetly praising and declaring the word of the Lord.

Bob led several church leaders in the reading of scripture about the power of our Living God, illustrating how he used the Word of God to call in the blessing of the Lord.

When we had accomplished what the Lord sent us to do we departed, regathering our group a few blocks away to record this day in which we had worked together to declare and establish the Name of the Most High God above all others. “THE EARTH IS THE LORDS, and the fullness thereof, the world and all those who dwell therein.”

As you view these faces it’s not hard to pick out the white faces of the AIM team, but another thing we want you to notice is the number of Tanzanian women who are stepping up to use their gifts to pray and and praise God, and following the call of God in helping to establish healthy and reproductive churches in a number of communities in the Bush.

It will be exciting to see how these actions open things up for this city to receive more of the Truth of the Gospel in the coming months and years.

Living water

The center of the monument appeared to be a fountain which was not working. A local Muslim man showed some concern at our presence, and pointed out to us that we were not allowed to stay here. We learned later that perhaps we needed a permit to have a “ceremony” of some sort in this place. We wished to cause no offense, and so we promised only to remain for a very short time.

Karen poured water from an earthen pot into the “fountain” (or was it a drain?) at the center of the monument while we all watched the water slowly bubble down. We all prayed and listened to the Spirit of God.

Prayer at the Flame

The Flame, a structure constructed in the center of a round-about near the center of Arusha, symbolizes the “birth” of the city. Engravings and symbols on each of the base pillars bringing farming and industry together. It seemed a fitting place for us to pray for the people of Arusha and to bless them in the name of the Most High God.

The AIM team arrived here on a Sunday afternoon and inquired of God how He wanted us to proceed. The Lord directed us to declare the word of the Lord in order to leave a lasting blessing on this spot for the people of Ausha.

Some local pastors and church leaders joined us so that we had AIM missionaries working along Tanzanian pray-ers to establish the name of the Most High God in this place.

At the end of the conference, Becky had the privilege of addressing the Unity Committee of the Dareda Valley Region. She explained to them that there have been people on the other side of the world who have been praying for them, not just during this conference, but also for several months in preparation for this conference. The entire group was very surprised and touched that brothers and sisters in Christ would love them and commit to praying for them.

Becky then presented the Chairman of the Unity Committee with a “zawadi” (Swahili for “gift”) from the Sunday Night Prayer and Bible Study Group of Ionia, Michigan. As he unfurled the banner, the crowd and other committee members clapped and praised the Lord. They came to understand that the passage written on the banner was John 3:16. And though it was not in their “mother tongue” language, they seemed quite happy and satisfied to have that very familiar passage in OUR language.

They felt very loved and cared for, and they agreed that this banner should accompany the Unity Committee at all future AIM conferences, both as a reminder of the love and care of their “distant brothers and sisters” but also as a reminder of the love of the Father Who sent His Son for our salvation. Praise God!

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.” (2 Chronicles 7:14-15)

Becky’s impressions: “When God's people earnestly seek Him - the Spirit of God fills the room. What you can't see in the picture of this room is the 90+ pastors crying out to God, seeking God for forgiveness and restoration. . . . Those pastors touched God's heart that day, and I am waiting with excitement and anticipation to hear what happens next in that area. God is up to something good!”

How honored Becky felt to be able to share and pray with God's people. She sat ouside during one of the break times, praying with a woman who suffers from an ailment that causes her temporary blindness from time to time. The episodes have been getting stronger and more frequent; however, they do not stop her from sharing the love of God with those around her. As she shared her story, Becky’s heart tore in half. This woman’s pastor also talked with Bob about her circumstances, and together they were able to pray safety and healing into her life.

As we left the conference, the woman (named “Alyca”) asked us to continue to keep her in our prayers. Please join us in prayer for this wonderful evangelist from the city of Mbulu. God has plans for her, and she is willing.

Val has been one of our strong intercessors before and during the conferences. At times, the speakers could even see her walking around the church or pausing to pray outside in the shade of an acacia tree. AIM was, in fact, blessed to have the team of 3 intercessors for the second conference in Katesh.

Having heard for hours about God’s covenant love and faithfulness toward them, these pastors and leaders had tears streaming down their faces during prayer times. The beauty of this fervent prayer must touch God’s heart. It most certainly touched ours.

Val had the wonderful privilege of addressing the pastors as well, and with the help of our translator Bayo, she demonstrated how close and personal God desires for us to be in relationship with his people.

*Special note: The pastor pictured in the bottom left of this picture (in the thinking position, barely visible) is the leader of the church in which we spoke. This is particularly notable because he is a member of the Barabaig tribe, a tribe who as of yet are awaiting a translation of the Bible into their language. They currently have only the gospel of Mark in their native tongue. Please pray!

Praise and Worship. . .Tanzanian style

One of our participants in the Katesh conference was this lovely and vibrant woman, Mary, a teacher in the Catholic church. Gifted by the Holy Spirit as a teacher, she was so excited about learning about the Covenant that she faithfully attended every session, studiously taking notes and following along in the training material and in her Bible, even repeatedly volunteering to stand and read a passage to the group. (This is a bit of a contrast to many of the pastors with limited education)

We encouraged her to come forward and lead the praise and worship time near the close of the conference. With a little coaxing, she shyly came forward to comply with our request, but that shyness diminished quickly with the songs of praise, and was finally flung aside with abandon in the worship as the pastors enthusiastically proclaimed the greatness of our Covenant God! There is no lack of passion when these Tanzanian ministry leaders sing and praise!

The AIM team is always blessed in our times of singing with them because they are a people with real depth of heart. They sing, harmonize, sing in rounds, raise their hands, clap, sway, dance and sometimes stomp their feet. African praise time can be an aerobic experience! Mary was not just vibrant in the music time; she also left us with the passionate promise that she was going to begin teaching the materials in her church at her first opportunity. . .only 3 days away!

Teaching and a Special Gift

The rural pastors listened intently to Bob’s insights regarding God’s covenant promises, a teaching insufficiently taught in the US and in East Africa. Several commented that this teaching series was of such value for understanding the foundation of our faith!

It was exciting to watch the translators being impacted by the Word even as they were translating. At times, they had to make difficult choices between wanting to write down what they just heard (so that they could retain it in full) OR actually translating the words as they heard them. We encouraged Polycarp to just translate in full, and then made sure he had the complete notes when the conference was over.

We want to give a special note of thanks to Polycarp for assisting us with translation for this conference. as well as to Steve McFarland (Key Connection Ministries - Arusha, Tanzania) for "lending" us his great employee for 3 days. Polycarp was a huge asset to us. We couldn't have done it all without him.

In addition to the valuable teachings, this pastor (and the many others in attendance) received a special gift: a copy of the recently released Ki-Swahili version of An International Minister’s Manual, by Jim and Carolyn Murphy, which you can see next to his Bible and training material. The late Jim Murphy had begun the translation process of this book over five years ago. Now, having been translated, formed, and shaped by many hands, including our own, it is finally being distributed by our ministry for the first time! We have had a significant work investment in this book, and we are delighted that this important volume is now available in the Tanzanian pastors’ native language. Hundredfold provided this book as a free gift to these servants of God, and they were thrilled!

Lunch time!

Lunch and sodas for 100+ conference attendees arrives in a over-sized wheelbarrow that the locals call “kokoteni” carts. We joined the pastors for each of the 4 days of lunches, eating the very Traditional Tanzanian meal of rice, beans, and mchicha (greens).

We are thankful that it is a meal we all enjoy. . .because we ate this same meal for 4 lunches and 4 dinners while we were in Katesh. Food is food in Tanzania and variety is not a necessity on the menu. Upon leaving Katesh, we all decided to leave rice and beans out of our diet for perhaps at least a week.

AIM was so privileged to welcome Karen to join us for 3 weeks. Her gifts as a teacher and an intercessor proved to be quite valuable. Both the AIM team and the pastors benefitted from her presence and involvement.

The African women pastors in Katesh listened intently and prayed deeply. One "Mama Mchungaji" (Mama Pastor), who is pictured here in the back, was so excited about the teachings. She assured us she would begin to share the new teaching “right away this Sunday" - two days away. Her enthusiasm was contagious.

Sugar cane harvest time

October also sees the harvesting of sugar cane. Truckloads of stalks are being loaded to leave the area, but not all the cane departs on trucks.

Not sure what this man is going to do with his few canes. We have heard that some locals even make alcohol from fermenting cane.

We had a great conference in Katesh. Most of the attending pastors were new to our ministry, since this location moved a bit beyond the edge of the Dareda valley and expanded the territory a bit. You can see the eagerness in their eyes as they received the teaching and came to understand the concepts of Covenant with God.

They were so responsive! As they received a “new” perspective on the “old” story of David and Goliath, their enthusiasm was obvious. It has truly been a blessing to see them so hungry for this teaching and so eager to participate.

We put them to work a little bit, taking notes and filling out some information on their own sheets. While it was a challenge to some (not common in this culture), they worked hard at it. We were even asked to pause a few times, to allow pastors to “catch up,” not necessarily because they were so slow, but because they were writing down everything and didn’t want to miss even one concept! They were very thankful that we were able to provide them with such a thorough material packet, which they intended to take home and teach to their congregations. This was very much an equipping experience, and this conference really hit the mark! We are so thankful to the Holy Spirit for "leading them into all truth" and for helping to drive these truths home for all of us--teachers and "students" alike.

Susan really enjoyed working with our friend Polycarp. He stepped in to assist Bayo in the translating work and was very well received by this group of pastors. They loved the stories that Susan wove for them. As she shared insights from the Lord, at times Polycarp would exclaim “AHH!” (momentarily forgetting that he was supposed to be translating, and getting enveloped in the gripping teachings). He would pause slightly, quickly writing down his own notes before making the translations of what she had just said. He, too, was hanging on every word and eager to soak it all in. What wonderful gifts God gave us in Bayo and Polycarp. They each have influence among many pastors, and their passion for God and for the people of God are such an encouragement to all of us.

Dry season

The soil in this part of East Africa is surprisingly fertile, and as part of the preparations for the coming rains, many of the fields have been tilled (by hand or by ox and plough) and now await the soaking moisture.

This dry time is, however, not void of beautiful scenes. Lacy purple jacaranda trees dot the hillside, but will be gone soon after the rains begin.

Susan (pictured in the front row, far right) has been a member of AIM’s Board of Directors since its incorporation in 2008; however, she was added to the traveling ministry team for one of the conferences in 2009, and gladly returned this year for all of the conferences.

Karen (front row, second from the left) joined us for the first time this year. Though she has been praying for us, it was time for her to come and see for herself what God is doing in East Africa.

Becky (second row, far left) is a member of AIM’s Board of Directors and has been a vital leader of our intercessory prayer team. She joined us “on the field” for the first time this year, as well.

Bayo (back row, middle) has been a faithful translator and member of our team since our initial visit to the Dareda Valley in 2007. He has accompanied us, translated written materials for us, and helped AIM as a translator and teacher during each of the conferences.

The church that hosted this month’s conference in Katesh was of the FPCT denomination (Free Pentecostal Church of Tanzania). The unfinished building was just a concrete shell. We had everything we needed. The pastor was welcoming toward his many guests from other denominations. The atmosphere was beautiful in the Holy Spirit.

Preparing for the coming rains

October finds the Dareda Valley preparing for the short rains.

Though the rains have not officially begun, the green hue over the valley attests to the sprinkles over the valley and over the grazing fields. We even spotted a few children playing while the flocks in their care grazed. We then watched them run to the stream with their brightly-colored buckets.

Glorious sunrises over the Indian Ocean

The eastern sun rises over this nearly silent seascape. Short waves break at the top of the water line. This entire stretch of visible Indian Ocean is a natural aquarium merely a few feet deep as far as the eye can see. Within hours, the tide recedes, the ancient-looking dhow boat lies on its side, and the seabed becomes walkable. For this waking moment, all is right, peaceful, and calm.

The entire AIM team was thankful to absorb this early morning gift.

Reef walking, too!

Early one morning a few of us hired a guide and walked the ¼ mile out to the reef. What amazing wonders of God’s creation!!! Our guide, Josef, did a great job teaching us about the creatures we found there. . .like this sea anemone he called a fire anemone. (Because if you step on it and the quills break through the skin, you will feel like you are on fire or, as Josef says, “You will dance with no music!”) This picture barely does justice to the bright red color and neon blue dots that outlined the star shape and certain quills.

It was a surprise to us that as we saw the tide begin to change, we realized we had been out on the reef for over 3 hours! My, how time flies! So we had to quickly make our way back to the beach before the waters got deep again. Our appreciation of God's creation expanded from this experience; He displays His care and love for us in every simple detail that He shows us in our world. How wondrous is our God!

We enjoyed a self-catering suite at the Royal Reserve in Mombasa. We bought groceries at a local grocery store and worked as a team to prepare meals. However, one of the evenings we decided to indulge in a seafood dinner at the hotel’s restaurant. Each of us ordered a different entree and then shared the fabulous flavors around the table.

Our scheduled AIM retreat on the Kenyan coast was absolutely wonderful. In addition to spending quality time with God and with each other, we particularly enjoyed our early mornings on the beach: walking, beach-combing, talking, praying.

We came home with several boxes full of shells and memories.

Bob even enjoyed talking to a few of the hawkers, selling their goods--

shells, seafood, jewelry made of shells, sea sponges,

even camel rides and dhow (small boat) excursions!

By the weekend, however, we had a reputation with all the hawkers on the beach:

"Those strange American people who understand when we are talking about them in Swahili

. . .and who don't buy anything."

Lentils (. . .we think)

In our travels we also discovered what we believe to be fields full of red-dusted lentil plants. (Bayo wasn’t sure what the name of this plant is in English; so we are, as of yet, unsure.)

Bayo did explain, however, that people dry these pods. Then they extract the mini bean-like seeds, grind them into a type of flour, and make cakes and things. Apparently, Indian people are mostly interested in buying this very expensive cash crop, and will come from as far away as Nairobi, Kenya to purchase truckloads of them.

We praise God for bringing new crops and new ideas into this region. This crop is ready to be harvested now, at this time of year. Then, as people prepare the soil for the rains that will come in a month or two, beans and maize will be planted for harvest in April.

Heading back home

On our way home we saw a familiar sight: not just a man with a heavy load, but a pastor who is returning to his village, having purchased food (probably maize or beans) to take back to his home. With his Bible tied down on the front of his bicycle and the heavy bags tied to the seat, he must now push his “vehicle” with its heavy load all the way home.

Another common sight on these back roads is broken-down buses or trucks that are parked (or rather, stuck) in the middle of the road. In this case, the bus broken down on the road is the bus on which Bayo was traveling with much of our conference gear! Unfortunately, with the next two buses filled to capacity, he was forced to stay for a day and a half before he could get another bus and get home to his family.

We thank God for such a dedicated ministry partner and friend, who went through quite the hassle.

We have developed good relationships with many of these pastors, and can call many of them by name. It is great to renew our connections and to hear how God has been touching their lives and opening doors for ministry since we last saw each other.

(Hey Bruce! I thought you may enjoy seeing another fellow Gideon! Pastor Marko has been distributing many New Testaments in Swahili throughout the secular high school system here in Dareda Valley.)

As the sun sets in the valley on the last day of conference, many pastors are already on their way home. Again, we can attest that God is at work here among the Iraqw people and their churches.

Though there were some delays and surprises at this conference, we are delighted to have had this opportunity to present new and deeper training for these ministry leaders in this region of Tanzania. Preparations are underway for our second conference on October 12-15 in Katesh.

Prayer time

As we have seen in the past, these pastors understand prayer to be a vitally important exercise. They fully expect to connect with God through prayer, petition and repentance, ...and in this environment it is very easy for us to join right in. There is no language barrier in the Spirit!

Tanzanian hospitality

We were blessed to stay in a brick and cement building, Bayo’s former home, built by Americans during a mission trip years ago. While we did not have modern conveniences, we were well fed, offered warm water for bathing daily, and slept on foam beds (as opposed to the floor only).

Their hospitality did not stop there! In addition to their warm welcome, I also had the privilege of having this little helper who wanted to assist me by carrying my briefcase to the house!

Movie watchers

You know, a child can always find a warm heart and welcoming arms when Val is around. Upon arriving in Sabilo, Hannah and Val made an immediate connection. Val’s lap became a perfect spot from which to watch the evening “cinema.”

Hannah was particularly attracted to Val’s hair. Whenever she was perched comfortably on Val’s lap, she would reach out to touch and admire. Sabilo doesn’t host too many “wazungu” (white-skinned people), so we’re not sure that Hannah had ever seen or touched hair like Val’s.

Two evenings in a row, we showed a movie in Swahili for the villagers at dark. The first night, however, we presented a short children’s movie before the “main attraction” (two different versions of the “Jesus” movie). This is quite an event in a village with such limited resources and utilities. Everyone in the village was invited, and word of mouth traveled quite quickly. Villagers will walk for miles, then stand in the dark for several hours to watch the productions.

Movie nights

The dark African nights provided the perfect setting for an outdoor showing of the Jesus movie. Hundreds watched. One pastor was so excited that he spontaneously jumped up during the movie exclaiming, “This is so true!” in the local tribal dialect.

Because there is no electricity anywhere near this village, movies are very rare. Our car’s battery and some low-power technology helped it all to happen—projector, speakers, DVD player,. . . and of course, the white sheet on the side of the building.

Our ministry team has a favorite song. Some of the words go like this:

“If my heart has grown cold, there Your love will unfold, as You open my eyes to the work of Your hands….”

In the last 3 days, my heart and my eyes have been opened to the work that God is doing in the Dareda Valley pastors. God has allowed me to participate in His love for them. I witnessed the sparkle in the pastors’ eyes as they began to understand through the teaching God’s desire to make them partners in His love covenant. With tears, I watched them passionately repent of misrepresenting God to their people.

I saw them reach and grab hold of His covenant truths. My heart filled with God’s love for them. What Victory! --Val

African children are always eager to pose for a “picha” especially if you let them view themselves on the digital camera screen. They will smile and laugh. I am very partial to the African children. They have the most beautiful smiles! Hannah (posing here on the right) with her brother and a friend lean on a sack of maize or rice outside her home.

This is the home of Hannah and her family. It was the closest place to the church, so we walked past it several times a day. This is also where the cooking of all the meals took place. It is a pretty typical African home in the Sabilo area, constructed mostly from red dirt made into bricks and plaster. The family sleeps inside, but the cooking all takes place on a fire outside. The three mamas who cooked our meals did an excellent job. The food was delicious.

Question: How does one portray an ancient covenant- making ceremony dramatically?

Answer: Slaughter a goat and drape its fresh skin across the floor. Gratefully, the cooks did the slaughtering, and our goat lunch was delicious. With a little prior notice, the goat skin was available then as a teaching aid.

In the ancient Old Testament covenant ceremony, the two partners to the covenant exchanged/confused their identities by exchanging robes, belts, weapons, and enemies. I think Bayo looks good in my jacket. . .but, his belt was a little tight.

The pastors spent a good deal of time reading Scripture passages and finding Biblical truth about God’s covenant with man through the Lord Jesus Christ. Covenant teaching changed the way some of them view key Bible stories, like David and Goliath. . .David and Mephibosheth. . .and even the curses on the land because of the Fall. These stories suddenly came alive in a new light!

For this first conference, we traveled to the village of Sabilo which sits deep in the valley, with a beautiful view of Mt. Hanang.

An enjoyable part of our travels is to see the different varieties of plant life as we go from desert to savannah to the mountains. It is always facinating to see the beautiful vegatation, which is significantly different from our West Michigan flora.

Oh, and have I mentioned that it gets a bit dusty here???
